Sweet Desert Rain

We've had overnight rain that has continued off and on into an overcast day.

No doubt all the desert plants need the rain, so we're not complaining and the forecast is for sunny days this week.

We're especially happy to have the rain since we planted a tree and some bushes at our site.  The management at the RV park allows tenants to add upgrades to their sites and some have put in awnings, fences and other items.  It is mainly tenants who return year after year and reserve the same site.  We have talked about traveling more during the winter and started out last year by staying a month at a time in different areas.  We decided we enjoy this area and RV park enough that we will be returning for at least several months each winter and have found a large site that works for us.

There are some desert plants and a tree already in the site, as can be seen in the first photo, however we thought more would be nice, so we added another tree and bushes seen in the second and third photo.

The maintenance guy at the park has even offered to put in a drip system for our new plantings later in the week, so the sweet desert rain just after we finished planting was perfect timing.  In the words of Croft Randle, "Life is Good!"

A Lesson To Be Learned

In Uruguay, Gerhald Acosta was hitchhiking home from work when a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle stopped to give him a ride.  Acosta took a photo of the couple.

Gerhald had been passed by 25-30 cars when the Beetle stopped.  Not until he got into the car did he recognize the occupants - Uruguay’s President Jose Mujica and his wife Sen. Lucia Topolansky.

“I couldn’t believe it, the president was giving me a ride,” said Gerhald. ”  "When I got out, I thanked them profusely, because not everyone helps someone on the road, and much less a president.”

President Mujica and his wife are well known for their humble lifestyle.  Mujica, a former leftist Tupamaro guerrilla leader, declined the presidential palace after he took office in 2010, and continues to live in a ramshackle farm which is in his wife's name.

Mujica says his blue Beetle is his only asset and he donates much of his $11,000 monthly government salary to homeless charities.  Since taking over as president, Mujica has reformed drug policies and is a leader for women’s and gay rights.

Commenting on his position, Mujica has said, “A president is a high-level official who is elected to carry out a function. He is not a king, not a god. He is not the witch doctor of a tribe who knows everything. He is a civil servant. I think the ideal way of living is to live like the vast majority of people whom we attempt to serve and represent.”

Anyone else think there is a lesson our American politicians can learn here?

Addle-Minded

In a study published last year by the Michigan Technological University, the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland in Australia and 10 other scientists, 4,014 abstracts on climate change found 97.2 percent of the papers assumed humans play a role in global warming.

The latest surveys show that 89 percent of Democrats, 79 percent of independents and 70 percent of Republicans already believe global warming is happening and is at least partly caused by human actions.  (Source:  Scientific America)

Now, here comes the one of the misguided skeptics.

On the same day (Wednesday) Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla) became the chairman of the Senate’s Environmental Committee he went to the floor of the senate declaring that climate change is a hoax.

Inhofe was joined on the floor by a group of scientists who disagree with a majority of climate scientists who believe that climate change is caused by human activity. One of those in attendance was Richard Lindzen, an MIT professor that has long believed global warming not to be real. Lindzen has notably held contradicting scientific opinions to many of his peers on a number of issues, even arguing that evidence to prove that smoking causes lung cancer is not strong enough to “rule that any questions were out of order.”

Inhofe criticized well founded scientific findings saying, “All they say now is ‘the science is settled, the science is settled’.  "The science is not settled.  Now I’m back in that position so we’ll have a chance to have hearings, and Mr. President, we’re going to have hearings with prominent scientists to come in and talk about this thing,” he said. “We’ll be there to be the truth-squad.”

Okie Dokie (pun intended) America... put your trust in an addle-minded puppet of big oil rather than educated scientists.

Clown Car In Iowa

Rep. Steve King hosted the GOP clown car event this weekend in Iowa with Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney noticeably absent, but that didn't stop the usual bunch from showing up.

Of the 87 applause breaks in President Obama's State of the Union address, which ones did the Republicans refuse to participate in?

•  An improving economy
•  A soaring stock market
•  Affordable health insurance
•  Solar energy
•  Tax cuts for working families
•  Affordable childcare
•  Tax cuts for families with children
•  Equal pay for women
•  A free and open internet
•  Rewarding companies that invest in America
•  Working Americans
•  A resolution for the use of the force against ISIL
•  Restoring relations with Cuba
•  Acknowledging that climate change exists
•  Prohibiting Torture
•  Equality for Gays
•  Closing Gitmo
•  Making voting easier for every single American

It's safe to assume that these were not topics at the GOP event in Iowa.

Isn't Going To Happen

President Obama's proposal to amend the tax code so the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share is called by some a "redistribution of wealth" and that cliché is getting old.  The fact is the wealthy and corporations have special benefits.

As I commented in a previous post,  a report conducted by Citizens for Tax Justice focused on 288 companies in the Fortune 500 that registered consistent profit every year from 2008 to 2012 and found that those corporations paid an effective federal tax rate of just 19.4% over the five year period - far less than the statutory 35% tax rate.  The corporate tax rate is 35%, however with all the tax loopholes corporations pay far less.  With tax inversion, some pay no federal taxes.  None.

For years the wealthy and corporations have had lobbyists who made sure they got extraordinary tax breaks.  It is time to amend the inequality in the tax code and President Obama is trying.  But, with a Republican controlled Congress that isn't going to happen.

Good At It

We are enjoying our stay here in Hope, AZ and taking life easy.

Our daily visitor.

The weather couldn't be better.

In a couple of days the "big show" will start in Quartzsite.  We've been over a couple of times and checked out the early flea market vendors.  Mostly the same stuff as last year, but it's good exercise walking around and checking them out.

Our Christmas Eve grandson is 3 weeks old and our daughter says he is gaining weight every day.

We only have 3G on our mifi, so I ordered a gizmo from Amazon (like I've mentioned in the past, I'm not a techno-nerd) that is suppose to increase the signal strength so we can face time chat.  It will be nice to see the little bugger on the computer screen.

That's about it as we continue fulfilling our retirement responsibilities.  We're getting good at it.

Not Holding My Breath

President Obama has proposed tuition-free two year community colleges for students on the condition they maintain a C+ average.  The Washington Post  has posed the questions of the day.

1)  Will Congress approve funding?

2)  Will the states push back?

3)  Will higher education embrace the plan?

4)  Will the public accept the plan?

Free tuition to two-year colleges will have a broad appeal, not unlike tuition free public high schools. Under the proposal the federal government would fund three quarters of the costs with the states picking up the rest.  Public two-year colleges serve nearly 40% of all undergraduates, however private two-year colleges would not be covered under this plan.

The benefits of education is indisputable, all the way from early childhood education (which this country is lacking) to higher education.  Beyond high school, education costs have become prohibitive for many.  College students are taking on massive debt, which they carry into their work careers.

President Obama’s proposal is an answer to entice and allow more students to get a higher education degree.  Many two-year colleges are geared towards a trade or specific profession.  By making a two-year college available to all it will mean more students will be entering the work force, adding to the economy.  And for those who wish to continue their education it will be a conduit to pursue a four-year degree.

As can be expected, the Republicans are already refusing to cooperate.

“Unless the president has a responsible plan to meet our existing commitments, he shouldn’t be making new promises the American people can’t afford,” said Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.), chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee. (WP)

With a majority of states controlled by Republican governors and legislatures there is little doubt they will refuse to participate, not unlike the Republican states which refused to set up health insurance exchanges.

The detractors will cite the estimated 10 year cost of $60 billion, wringing their hands about how we are going to pay for this.  Well, here’s an idea:  take the annual $6 billion for education out of the already bloated military’s $711 billion annual budget.  I’m sure with all their waste they won’t even miss it.

All the candidates for public office bloviate about public education.   Now is the chance for all these loudmouths to step up and do something productive for education.  But, I’m not holding my breath they will.

Annual Pilgrimage

Other than my rant about Congress yesterday (which I should know better with this worthless Congress) we did have a good day.  We drove to Quartzsite and walked around the rock show.

This year's RV show starts on the 17th, however the town was busy and traffic is already a problem. The RV'ers have started to come into town and the big tent is up preparing for vendors.

No doubt we will make a couple trips the the RV show and while we don't need anything specific, I'm sure we'll come home with some stuff.  If nothing else, it is a good way to pass the time looking at all the displays.  We'll blend right in with all the other RV'ers who make the annual pilgrimage to the Q.

Shit For Brains Congress

President Obama was in Phoenix today to announce executive action lowering insurance rates on federally issued mortgages to first-time home buyers, minorities and struggling Americans, but his visit wasn’t without the typical Republican hand-wringing and “chicken little” cries.

Obama is being criticized for not stopping his motorcade at the VA center in Phoenix, as if he was personally snubbing the VA.  What a bunch of crap.  No doubt the entire day was planned by the Secret Service and planners.

Also, today is the fourth anniversary of the shooting of Gabby Giffords and eighteen others in Tucson.

Hey Congress, how’s it going on some reasonable assault weapons regulations?  Nothing has been done since Sandy Hook and the shooting of Gabby Giffords you say?

Well, what can we expect from this shit for brains Congress controlled by the lobbyists?

To Market, To Market

We are all settled in and decided to go to the Mexican fruit and veggie market just 7 miles down the road.  We went there last year and everything is fresh.

Some enterprising family brings the commodities up from Mexico and opens the market twice a week.  A few people around here whine about the price, but for us it isn't so far out of line, especially because of the quality.

It's what you might call a shoestring operation and I'm sure some negotiate the price.  As far as we are concerned it is already a value.  Besides, we don't have a problem supporting a family who goes to all this work bringing the product in.

Going to the market is about all we have going on for the day.  We're still working hard at being retired.

We're Here

We made it to Ramblin Roads RV Park in Hope after a long day of driving from Deming. We left Deming at 7:00 AM and got here about 4:00 for a total of 450 miles of driving, which is beyond my usual limit of 300 miles a day.  The only consolation in that long drive was that we had a tail wind, which helped our diesel towing mpg.

Last winter we wandered some around Arizona and New Mexico checking out various RV "parks" and enjoyed Ramblin' Roads the best.  I suppose it is because it is in the country and we aren't much for cramped city RV parks.  It's no frills, but comfortable.  It is close to Quartzsite and within a reasonable driving distance to Parker or Lake Havasu.  I'll try and get some pics soon.

Also, the forecast is finally looking up, as compared to back in Nebraska.

Take Care George And Suzie

Most retirees and RV'ers have family back home which sometimes causes our plans to change.  In our case our trip south was delayed this year by the birth of our first grandchild.

A different family concern has happened to fellow blogger George Yates.  George and Suzie were in California when they got word of family issues back home in Ontario. Suzie is flying home from Phoenix and George is driving their RV back. We met George and Suzie last year in Benson and had a great visit.  We enjoy George's blog on a daily basis and he has a large following of other travelers.

Photo from George's blog

RV'ers know plans can change.  Take care George and Suzie. Hopefully everything turns out okay back home.

Not Like We Have To Be Anywhere

Well, we're stuck in Tucumcari.  Not literally, since we have four wheel drive, but with 6 inches of snow we decided it's not worth going out, so we are staying another night.

It's not like we have to be anywhere and we are toasty warm in the camper.

Dodging Snow

We made it to Kinsley, KS today and still aren't out of the weather.  The forecast is for 1-3 inches of snow Friday into Friday night, so we're certainly not going to stick around.

Our next overnight will be Tucumcari, NM and the forecast is only a little better.

Seems like we're dodging snow this year, but by Saturday we should be in the Las Cruces area and hopefully warmer.
