Not-my-president trump's tantrum government shut down over his border wall that he promised Mexico would pay for is on.  Now the moron-in-chief is threatening to close the Mexico border entirely.


Consider this:  In a couple of weeks the "really big show" will be in Quartzsite and thousands of seniors will show up in their RV's.  Many have plans to make the annual trek to Los Algodones for cheap drugs, eye glasses and dental work.


Complete border closing?  Hmmm... are we looking at a resurrection of the grey panthers?

On so many levels this is absurd.

It is absurd that Republicans in the House can find $5 BILLION for a stupid ass wall, but can’t fund health care.

It is absurd that they aren’t throwing it back in not-my-president trump’s face that he promised over and over again that Mexico would pay for his stupid ass wall.


It is absurd that so many can be so duped by a demagogue into believing that blowing $5 BILLION on stupid ass wall is even related to immigration.

Echo, Not In Our Future


During happy hour the other evening our RV park neighbor brought out a little oblong shaped speaker named Alexa which played music on command.  Somewhere I had heard of this device and this was the first time I have seen one.  Turns out it was an “Echo” from Amazon and it works on some kind of spooky cloud via the internet. 

 
Technology is leaving me in the dust.  For the most part is isn’t because I’m not trying.  It is a matter that everything has to be perfectly aligned to work and it all hinges on the internet.
Because we live on a farm we don’t have reliable access to the internet.  Thus, our only choice is a mifi “hotspot” from Verizon.  

That has its limitations.  It works well, so long as there is a strong enough cellular signal, which we don’t have on the farm.  It also works well, until Verizon throttles us back to crawling speed on their so-called unlimited plan.


Not unlike most RV parks, the internet at the park where we stay the winter is marginal at best.  The same is the case for our wifi, since we are miles from a Verizon tower.  Thinking the solution would be a signal booster for both the farm and RV park, I invested nearly $350 in the “latest and greatest” thing.  It isn’t.  (Can you see a pattern here?)


We have a mifi that only works based on a tower location and when Verizon isn’t throttling it.  We have a signal booster that barely boosts the signal.  We can’t stream anything like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon movies or all that other sophisticated techno stuff.  Near as I can tell Amazon’s “Alexa” is only as good as a solid and consistent internet signal.  

I don’t see an “Echo” in our future.

Mandatory Tipping Is Wrong

The other day my wife and I went with two other couples to a bar/restaurant to have a few beers, each on separate tickets.  The amount on our bill for our beers and an pricey pretzel hor d'oeuvre was $35.  Included was a mandatory "tip" of $7.  Seriously, $7 on a $35 bar bill!  

The explanation was that we were a group of "6 or more."  Our server wasn't the worst, however wasn't the best - certainly not $7 worth.  The decision to tip as a gratuity was taken away.  

Back in 2013 I commented (reprinted below) why tipping has gotten out of hand, especially mandatory tipping.  It hasn't changed since then.    

  

TIPS ARE MANDATORY

I watched one of those reality shows on television the other evening where a bar owner paid no salary to his bartenders or servers.  Instead, their “wages” consisted of whatever they got in tips.  Incidentally, they were all female bartenders and servers.  Consequently, in an effort to enhance their tips, they fawned all over the male patrons and essentially ignored female patrons or couples.   I suppose you could consider them independent contractors and it sure was a sweet deal for the bar owner.  No wages, no withholding, none of those pesky tax reports and no worries about any sort of job benefits.  As far as I am concerned, he is a sleazy rat. 

The premise of the reality show was how to make the bar more successful, but it got me thinking about tips and how tipping has evolved from being a gratuity or voluntary reward - a quid pro quo of sorts - to a mandatory requirement.  My wife is convinced I dislike tipping because I am a curmudgeon.  She is mostly right, but in this case I have a logical explanation for why I think the time has come to end tipping, or at least return it to being a genuine gratuity.

1)  a gift of money, over and above payment due for service, tip.
2)  something given without  claim or demand,  something given voluntarily or beyond obligation, usually for some service, especially tip.

I don’t know where the practice of tipping based on a percentage of the bill originated, but at one time the figure of 10% seemed to be the norm.  Now, apparently the norm has been upped to 20%.  There is limited data - obviously because tips are not always accurately reported for tax purposes - however, a 1990 Iowa State University restaurant survey found that tips ranged from 13% to 16%.   Essentially the same figures resulted from a study conducted in 2003 by Brigham Young University.  In some instances, restaurants impose a compulsory gratuity on the customers bill, often 20%.

Using a percent of the bill to establish the tip is senseless.  For example, if two customers are sitting at adjourning tables and one has a steak dinner for $30, while the other has a hamburger dinner for $10, using a 10% formula there is a disparity in the obligatory tip for the same service.  Same order taking, same delivery and same cleanup.

No matter what the percent used to determine the tip, it seems to me that it is no longer based on the concept of gratuity and is, instead, compulsory without regard to the service provided.  And it seems inequitable that if I buy a meal for ten bucks at Arby’s and pick it up at the counter there is no expectation of a tip.  On the other hand, if I buy essentially the same meal at a restaurant, where my order is taken and the meal is served, there is an expectation (bordering on obligation) that I leave at least a buck or two as a tip.  Just as unreasonable is the expectation that a tip should be left based on the service provided.  Basically, we are setting the standard of service as “mediocre.”  Leave 10% for mediocre and more for above mediocre. 

It’s time to wipe the slate clean. It is time to return to the standard of tips being a true gratuity, given where service is beyond mediocre.  It is time to end tipping based on a percentage of the bill.  It is time to end the obligation of leaving a tip in every instance. Most of all, employers should pay a living wage so that employees don't have to rely on tips just to get by.  At least from the perspective of a bonafide curmudgeon.

Sandy Hook Times Six


Today is the SIXTH anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and this is the sixth time I have posted about the shooting.  One would have thought that the deaths of 20 children and 6 teachers and staff would shock Congress into passing realistic gun regulations.




The memory of Sandy Hook has long faded in Congress and instead of passing reasonable gun regulations, they continue to kowtow to the NRA.


Every time there is a mass shooting in this country, the NRA regurgitates the same crap about how more guns would be better - "a good guy with a guy"... blah, blah, blah.

Nothing has changed.  Shootings of innocents with assault weapons continues.  All the while Congress does nothing but suck up to the crazies at the NRA.


Nothing came from hearings in Congress after Sandy Hook and nothing ever will, except more laws adding to the proliferation of guns.  There aren’t words strong enough to describe how worthless this Congress is.  After all, not even the killing of 20 children and 6 educators persuaded Congress to act.

Vote


At a White House speech on Thursday, not-my-president Trump suggested that troops should fire on migrants if they throw rocks, saying that rocks should be considered rifles and comparing the group of about 3,000 men, women and children to an “invasion."


With the mission currently set for November 5 through December 15, for a total of 41 days, the cost of deploying 8,000 troops and air support ranges from approximately $42 million to $55 million. Not-my-president Trump has said the total number of troops could climb as high as 15,000, estimated to cost approximately $90 million to $110 million.

Sorely Missed

We will be heading to Arizona for the winter in a couple of days, but this year will be different.  Doug the Pug will not be going along.


We adopted Doug 10 years ago and he immediately became part of our family.  He loved to travel and was at home both on the farm and in Arizona.

  





Recently he was showing his nearly 13 years of age.  He was blind and deaf and had lost most of his teeth.  Because of seizures he was disoriented.  The time had come to have him humanely put to sleep.  

Doug was a best friend and is sorely missed.

Under Fascism


Not-my-president Trump is sending 5200 military troops to the U.S. southern border, creating his own crisis to influence the midterm elections, notwithstanding that there are already 2000 national guard troops there at a cost of $185 million since the beginning of the year. 

 

It is unfathomable that anyone, other than is rabid base, can’t see through this ruse.  The fact is that the military is prohibited by federal law from acting as law enforcement.

Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.


Using current immigration law, based on the cost of sending the military to the border, not-my-president Trump could hire hundreds, if not thousands, of customs officials to process the refugees seeking sanctuary.

And just to keep people frightened, not-my-president Trump has now declared that he will end birthright citizenship by executive order.  Seriously!  He has stated that he intends to circumvent the Constitution of the United States!  Is it possible that none of the government lawyers are willing to tell this moron that he doesn't have the power to usurp the Constitution?

Come Up With A Plan

Not-my-president Trump continues to stir the pot of fear and hate to influence the midterm elections by claiming that the "caravan" of asylum seekers from Central America includes criminals, ISIS sympathizers and MS 13 gang members and are a "national threat" (all proven to be false).  He has also said he will summarily stop them at the Mexican border and refuse them entry.   He has threatened to send U.S. military forces to the border.

This is not the crisis that not-my-president Trump is making it out to be in order to plant his continuing fear tactic.  The fact is that U.S. Immigration Law includes provisions for just such situations.

Asylum is granted to foreigners who have been persecuted or legitimately fear persecution in their home country. 

Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien’s status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.  8 U.S. Code § 1158

 


What is the cost of not-my-president Trump's plan to send the 800 soldiers to the border?  

Here's a suggestion:  how about showing some leadership and spend that money hiring the people necessary to process those seeking asylum?  The U.S. Immigration Code provides sufficient foundation to establish a realistic plan.  You have had plenty of time to come up with a plan.

It Is Time

It is now time.

Fourteen pipe bombs were mailed to prominent government officials and private citizens.  Some were dismissing them as a possible hoax to influence the upcoming midterm elections.



These specious claims were dismissed by FBI director Christopher Wrey following the arrest of a suspect when he said, "these are not hoax devices."



What is clear is that the incendiary rhetoric of not-my-president Trump has led to these bombings.



Steeped in Trump vitriol, Floridian Cesar Sayoc targeted the media and individuals on not-my-president Trump's hit list.



Rather than admit his complicity, resulting from his rhetoric, not-my-president Trump resorted to blaming the media.  Just as complicit are congressional Republicans who have chosen to enable not-my-president Trump.

It is time to wake up America.  It is time for "we the people" to restore the rule of law in our government.  It is time for "we the people" to restore our democracy.  It is time for "we the people" to restore checks and balances in our government.  It is time for "we the people" to restore the dignity of our presidency. 

It is time for control of the House and Senate to change on November 6th.

A Fraudulent Weasel

By now most everyone has, or should have, heard of Paul Manafort.  Suffice to say he is a convicted crook.





Manafort moved more than $30 million that he made from his Ukrainian clients from a complex web of offshore shell companies into the United States between 2008 and 2014. He spent about half of it buying real estate and luxury goods and services, and the other half as supposed “loans” to US companies he controlled.

But he did not report any of these millions on his income tax returns — or pay taxes on it. He also falsely said, on those tax returns, that he had no authority over any financial accounts in foreign countries. 

Manafort’s vast offshore financial holdings were the basis of other charges as well. He controlled at least 14 separate foreign accounts in Cyprus and the Grenadines, and prosecutors claimed a total of more than $75 million flowed through those accounts.

Prosecutors said that between 2015 and early 2017, Manafort defrauded or attempted to defraud several US banks, by lying about his company’s finances and other matters in loan applications.

To get a $3.4 million loan on a New York City condo he owned, Manafort falsely told Citizens Bank that the property was a second home when it was a rental property, failed to disclose previous mortgage debt, and, after the lender discovered that debt, falsely claimed it was forgiven. He was convicted of one count of bank fraud for this.

In search of another loan, Manafort submitted a doctored profit and loss form to the Banc of California that overstated his consulting firm’s income by more than $4 million. He was convicted of another count of bank fraud.


On Friday Manafort appeared in a Virginia federal court in a wheelchair, missing his right shoe, and visibly grayer.  His lawyers said Manafort, 69, was dealing with "significant" health issues and asked the court to expedite his sentencing and, no doubt playing the sad violin, feigning to get a lesser sentence.



You know what Paul... I'm 68, worked all of my adult life, paid all of my taxes, currently on social security, and have age related health issues.  I haven't defrauded anyone out of millions of dollars.  I'm a little hard pressed to feel sorry for you.

In fact Paul, you are a fraudulent weasel.  I hope the sentencing judge sees through your act and puts you and your wheel chair in the slammer for the rest of your life.

Have I Mentioned?

My two friends and I had talked this summer about driving a Model T down to Kansas to check out a craft brewery.  Time got away from us and we decided we better do it this weekend, but based on the forecast opted to drive in a modern car.



We enjoy trying the beers at different breweries or brew pubs and this proved to be worth the 100 mile drive.




The drive to Kansas was a nice fall day, however on the drive home today we ran into the forecasted #@^* (snow).  Looks like we got several inches here on the farm.

Modern Age

Okay, Okay... I'll admit I was wrong about the iPhone.

Over time I've whined about my dumb phone from Verizon.  Mostly because it is too clunky to carry around.  I also commented back in July that Verizon said my phone would soon be obsolete.

The only alternative is a selection of several dumb phones, which must be purchased for $150 - $360.  But, lo and behold, there is a wide selection of smart phones.  Can you say "high profits?"

While we were in the city last week I stopped at a larger Verizon store to explore options.  Turns out the Apple iPhone SE is being discontinued.  Even still it comes at a hefty price of $350 (Yup, I'm still a tighwad).  On top of that there is a $30 connection service charge and an additional charge of $30/month because it is a "smartphone."  Essentially our cell phone bill would increase by $50/month.

Figuring since I got along well enough with a dumb phone all these years I'd look into Tracfone see if there was a way to cut costs.  Initially I was searching their dumb phones, however they had the iPhone SE on sale for $215. which included 60 days of service.

 

No hookup fees, no service charges, keep the same phone number and numerous service plans to select from.  After the included 60 days of service it is a matter of determining how much talk, text and data was used to purchase a service plan.  Based on my past usage with the dumb phone it looks like my monthly cost will be $15-$20 for a service plan.  After all, I seldom make or receive calls and text every so often.  No other added fees like Verizon.

I refused to consider an iPhone because I didn't want to carry around a brick in my pocket.  The iPhone SE is the smallest and lightest Apple made.  Compared to my dumb phone it is lighter and thinner.




So, I've finally joined the techno age.  In the words of Russell Crowe in the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World, "what a fascinating modern age we live in."

I’m dismayed, but not surprised that Brett Kavanaugh was voted onto the Supreme Court. 


Notwithstanding the sexual assault claims against Kavanaugh, he is wholly unqualified for the Court because of his historical alignment with the Republican party, his intransigent ideology and his clear harsh temperament.

The upcoming midterm election is crucial to replacing the checks and balance in government now that the Supreme Court has become a political body.

Safe Now

This little guy showed up this morning on the outside of our fence.  Thinking it was one of the nice neighbor farmer's calves, I phoned to let him know there was a calf that got out of his pasture.



When the farmer got here he said it wasn't his calf and we agreed it would be a good idea to put him in with his cows so it didn't get hit on the road.  Turns out it is likely a bucket calf (tame orphan) and it was easy moving him into the pasture with the other cows.  The cows gave him the once over and decided to let him stay.



It's still hot during the afternoon, so the cows linger around under the trees on the fence line.



It's hard telling how long the stray calf had been wandering around.  He is limping and has some minor injuries.  At least he is safe now until someone claims him.

A paramount issue in the Judge Kavanaugh hearing is unlimited and unfettered powers of the president, which he has espoused.  Kavanaugh would free the president from criminal investigation or indictment while in office.  Additionally, he would limit the protections of an independent investigator.

The far right has had, and implemented, a long term plan for the take-over of the Supreme Court.  Judge Kavanaugh, a long time operative of the Republican party, has been hand picked as part of that plan.  In an unprecedented move Republicans have withheld crucial documents of Kavanaugh's past during the hearing.

John Dean has seen what happens when the rule of law and the Constitution are abrogated.  Once Kavanaugh is seated on the Supreme Court, this abrogation will be ratified by the Republican majority on the court.

Shingles, Seniors and Shingrix. Huge Profits To Be Made


I recently went in for my annual physical with the same doctor I have been seeing for over 30 years.  At the completion of the physical he told me that there was a new shingles vaccine that I should have, even though I had one several years ago.  He explained that the new vaccine is essential for seniors and was more effective.  There was a catch.  

First, the vaccine was in limited supply and wasn’t currently available.  Second, it requires two injections 2 to 6 months apart.  Third, and most shocking, the vaccine cost of $300 each injection is not covered by Medicare.  What the hell?!

(Medicare) Shingles is a common viral infection that causes a painful rash, according to the Mayo Clinic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles (herpes zoster) in their lifetime. The risk of shingles increase with age, with about half of all cases occurring in adults age 60 years old and older.

So, what about the new shingles vaccine Shingrix?


THE MANUFACTURER

Shingrix is manufactured by the London based company GlaxoSmithKline, which enjoyed 2017 after tax profits of $2.1 billion.   

(Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline is facing “unprecedented” demand for its new shingles vaccine Shingrix, suggesting the product could be a bigger money-spinner than the company and analysts initially thought.

Consensus forecasts currently point to peak annual sales for Shingrix of around $2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data, with the U.S. market the main driver. But this number may prove to be too low, according Exane BNP analysts.

The brokerage reckons sales could rise to $3.9 billion if Shingrix can achieve market penetration rates of around 60 percent - double the level seen with Zostavax (previous shingles vaccine).


MEDICARE

The shingles vaccine falls under Medicare Part D, as a prescription drug, and not as a preventive fully covered under Medicare Part B like the flu and pneumonia vaccines.

(MedShadow) For seniors on a fixed income, getting any shingles vaccine might be a matter of budget over health. A “fair price” for Zostavax is $206, with some pharmacies charging $245, according to HealthcareBluebook.com. The “fair price” for each Shingrix shot is $151, with some pharmacies charging nearly $300 per shot. (emphasis added)

Inclusion in Medicare Part D creates barriers to administration. “For people 65 and older, most doctors don’t even stock the vaccine and can’t be bothered to go through all the rigmarole to bill Medicare for it,” says Dr. Schaffner. Doctors who do stock the vaccine may charge patients upfront, requiring them to get reimbursed by their insurance provider.


CONGRESS

(MedShadow)  Efforts to get Congress to move other ACIP-recommended vaccines, including the shingles vaccine, to Medicare Part B, have gone nowhere fast, he says. “No one has any optimism in the current political environment that we’re going to get that. The dominant theme is to tear down the Affordable Care Act, so they’re not going to start expanding preventive health services.”



It appears like everything is lined up so everyone in the pipeline is taken care of - except seniors.

GlaxoSmithKline stands to make exorbitant profits on Shingrix.  The first step in maximizing profit is to be a singular supplier.  The second step in creating a demand for the vaccine is to be in control of supply.  The third step is to promote and it won’t be long until we will see advertising.  Once again profit overshadows the public good.

As it goes through the pipeline, everyone takes their cut.  The determined fair price for Shingrix is $151.  By the time it reaches the doctor or pharmacy, who likely take a cut, the cost is $300.  Congress has refused to make Shingrix covered under Medicare Part B.  Rather than negotiate a realistic price from the manufacturer and cover the cost of Shingrix in Medicare, Congress would rather pay much more in medical costs when someone gets shingles.

Shingrix appears to be essential for seniors.  A retired couple on fixed income or social security alone will likely have to pay $1200 for the injections.  More probable is that they will not get the injections because of cost, leaving it to Medicare or Medicaid to pay more later when they get shingles. 

But why make any changes now when there are huge profits to be made?
