VW Bus Nirvana

This weekend we attended the 24th annual Buses By The Bridge in Lake Havasu, a gathering of all VW buses.  There were more than 560 (yes, 560+) VW buses from all over the world.  So many it was hard to pick which to get pics of.

In every model  and condition:

Dead In The Water

Wouldn't you know it... the one thing I didn't replace when I restored the Beetle was the pedal assembly and it just failed.

Over the 50 years the clutch pedal developed a stress area and it finally cracked.  The stock photo below shows where it cracked.

No doubt the new clutch and pressure plate added to the stress on the pedal since they have much tighter tolerances than the old clutch.  The only fix is a new or replacement pedal assembly.  I had ordered an new clutch pedal only, however since the whole assembly has to come out to replace it I decided it is best to replace the whole assembly instead.  No doubt there are other wear areas on the old assembly.

The only question was whether to replace the assembly with a new one, used one or refurbished one.  The reviews on the new ones weren't the best and described poor fit and quality.  Taking a chance on a used one didn't seem best either, so I ordered an original German manufactured refurbished assembly.  That should insure a proper fit and original standard.  While I was at it I ordered an new clutch cable.  Just as well do now what I should have done during the restoration.

Until all the parts arrive the Beetle is, as they say, dead in the water.
