More about Country Joe: Three year U.S. Navy veteran. McDonald's long-standing commitment to Vietnam veterans and the peace movement was in evidence throughout his career and remains part of his legacy. He successfully led the effort to create the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Berkeley, California and was involved in establishing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in San Francisco. He performed at GI coffeehouses and commemorative events and benefits across the country for organizations such as San Francisco's Sword to Plowshares, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and at ceremonies at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. Thanks Bill, saw that he had passed, another icon of that era gone. His music and that of Credence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, & Dylan just to name a few were the fabric of life for many of us. One heard their music all over SE Asia. Joe and others like him who were instrumental in the peace movement and support for ending that war will long be remembered by those of us that served then. RIP Joe.
I often find myself either singing (if I'm alone) or humming the song.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike. Your history adds credibility.
